Care Guide for Wool carpet and rugs
GENERAL CARE
Vacuum regularly: once a week for most areas; two or three times a week in heavy use areas
Use a vacuum with soft bristles or no beater brush at all. We recommend the Soniclean
SCF-7000 Sift Carpet Vacuum.
Use a vacuum with good suction but not extreme suction.
Check vacuum bag or canister; empty it when half full
Check for blocked hoses or intake openings
Check for worn brushes; clean dirty brushes
Check for things on the bottom that can snag
Blot up spills immediately
Use absorbent towels: cotton or real paper
Use suction of vacuum to lift residue of spills
Do not rub or scrub; this will fuzz the pile
See “Spot Cleaning”, below
Clean carpet, or have it professionally cleaned, every 12 to 18 months or sooner if required
CLEANING
Clean wool carpet at regular intervals, rather than waiting until it looks soiled.
Unlike many synthetics like nylon or olefin, wool carpet yarns are made up of short fibers. They will fuzz if brushed or scrubbed. Use a blotting technique to pick up spills.
Do not apply silicone-based soil repellent treatments. They will prevent soil from releasing from the wool fibers.
Save a scrap or two of new carpet to test the safety of cleaning products.
The best method for cleaning wool carpet is hot water extraction (steam cleaning), which should
be done every 12-18 months. It is important that the cleaning solution be rinsed
from the carpet to keep the residue from holding new soil. Wool carpet is fine if it gets wet
but should never be soaked.
SPOT CLEANING
Blot spills with white paper towels (real paper) or with a clean absorbent cloth (cotton is most absorbent).
Pretest cleaning agent in an inconspicuous area or on a saved scrap of the same carpet.
Apply cleaning agent to an absorbent towel, not directly on the carpet, and blot.
Do not over-wet the carpet
Work inward from the edge of the spot to prevent excessive spreading
Rinse by applying clear water using a clean cloth. Work from the edge to the center. Do not rub
and do not over-wet.
Remove excess moisture by applying pressure with paper towels or absorbent cloth.
To dry, apply a thick layer of paper towels or a folded cotton cloth or towel and weigh them down.
If necessary, brush the pile with your fingers to restore the texture after the area has dried.
